Cornelius H. Schmit

FREMONT — Funeral Mass for Cornelius H. Schmit, 86, of Fremont were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont. The Reverend Fathers Walter Nolte, Roger Schmit and Stan Schmit Fremont were held at 10:30 a. m. Wednesday Nov. 7   Honors was at Calvary Cemetery in Fremont. Visitation continued on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Schmit died Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at Wisner Care Center at Wisner.  Cornelius was born Nov. 21, 1931, at McLean to Cornelius J. and Gertrude (Billerbeck) Schmit. He was raised in the Randolph area and farmed there. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Feb. 25, 1953, to Dec. 22, 1954. Cornelius married Lucille Aschoff on Aug. 27, 1957, in Randolph. He returned to farming after the service and moved to Arlington in 1984 and worked at Rhea Cattle Company. The couple moved to Fremont in 1992. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Fremont, Knights of Columbus Council #1497 and V. F. W. post  #8332 of Arlington. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucille; sons, Richard (Sara) Schmit of Fremont, Stephen (Susan) Schmit of North Platte and Mark (Robyn) Schmit of Eureka, MO; daughters, Mary Jo (Charlie) Ware of Lawrenceville, GA, Vonda (John) Walker of O’Fallon, IL, and Joni (Shawn) Mattingly of Bennington; son-in-law, John Davin of Wildwood, MO; brothers, Henry (Carolyn) Schmit of Osmond, Father Roger Schmit of Conception, MO, Jerome “Jerry” (Pat) Schmit of Norfolk and Norbert (Pat) Schmit of Grove City, PA; sisters, Ann McHugh of Royal, IA, Lucille Knievel of Norfolk, NE, and Rita Aschoff of Osmond, and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Michelle Davin; brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Shirley Schmit, and sisters, Sister Barbara Schmit and Sister Lucretia Schmit.
