Alice Laureen Gatzemeyer

NEWCASTLE — Alice Laureen Gatzemeyer, 65, Newcastle, died unexpectedly July 26, 2020, at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital, Vermillion, S.D.

Visitation will be Friday, from 5-8 p.m., with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Private Family Mass of Christian Burial will be Aug. 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Newcastle, with Rev. Andy Sohm officiating. Services will also be live-streamed at www.facebook. com/WintzRay/live. Facemasks and social distancing will be observed and required for the visitation and funeral.

Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington.

Alice was born Oct. 21, 1954, in Yankton, S.D., to Leonard Joseph and Mary Marjorie (Day) Pinkelman. She grew up in the St. James and Wynot area. She attended Sts. Philip and James Elementary School until it closed and consolidated in 1968. She graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1973.

Alice married the love of her life, John Gatzemeyer Aug.3, 1974. Alice and her best friend and partner, John, made their home in the Newcastle area.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and the St. Peter’s Catholic Women’s Guild.

During her life, Alice worked at several places, including the Village Café, Newcastle; Menards, Sioux City, Iowa; Coyote Canyon, Sioux City, Iowa; Newcastle High School as a cook, and lastly at the Vermillion schools as a cook.

Alice loved her cats and all other animals on the farm. She was loved by so many people and will be greatly missed.

Alice is survived by her loving husband, John, Newcastle; her brother, Raymond Pinkleman, Yankton, S.D., and sister, Carol (Harold) Goeden, Wells, Minn.; John’s siblings, Shirley Carper, Valley; Betty Lou (Bob) McCormick, Gilbert, Ariz.; Kathy Watkins, Dakota City; Robert (Donna) Gatzemeyer, Tekamah; Tom (Jane) Gatzemeyer, Rocheport, Mo.; lots of loving nieces, nephews, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard and Mary Pinkelman; John’s parents, Earl and Anna Gatzemeyer; three brothers, Gerald, Martin and Ronald Pinkelman; and many aunts and uncles.
