Alan T. “Al” Seagren

LINCOLN — Alan T. “Al” Seagren, 86, Lincoln, died in his home Nov. 27, 2018.

Al was born Feb. 24, 1932, at the family farm in Wausa, to Theodore & Elsie (Larson) Seagren. He graduated from Wausa High School in 1949. During his youth on the farm he developed an affinity for hunting and fishing that he maintained throughout most of his life. From 1949-1951, Al attended Luther College, Wahoo, where he was on the football team. He earned degrees from the University of Nebraska Lincoln: B.S. in 1953, M.Ed. in 1958, and Ed.D. in 1962. Al was a United

States Army Veteran, serving in military intelligence during and after the Korean Conflict. Al married Sharon Krauter July 30, 1960 in Clatonia. They had two children. Eric was born in 1962 and Tracy was born in 1965. He retired after over 50 years of dedicated service to the University of Nebraska. His roles at the University of Nebraska included Principal of University High School, Director of Summer Sessions, Associate Vice Chancellor of UNL, Vice President of Business for the University of Nebraska System, and Professional Director of the Center of Study of Higher Education at UNL. Al was a lifelong learner and educator, and continued to teach graduate classes throughout his career. He was also an international visiting professor in Japan, China, Australia, Sweden, Thailand and Guam, and supervised individuals from Australia, China, Guam, and from Japan while they earned their Doctorates.

He was very active in service to various church and educational organizations including Tabitha, Midland University, ELCA National Church Council, Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Augsburg Fortress Publishing, and College and University Partnership Program.

Al is survived by his wife, Sharon, Lincoln; son, Eric (Jennifer Becker) Seagren, Hancock, Mich., and daughter Tracy (Dean) Way, Lincoln; grandchildren, Birk Seagren, Ingrid Seagren, Quentin Fortney, Emma Fortney, Chris Way and Kyle Way; great-grandson, Franklin Way; sister, Eloise Sward, Sully, Iowa; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Krauter, Lincoln.

Al was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law, Robert Sward; and sister-in-law, Sonja Krauter.

Memorial Services were Nov. 30 at First Lutheran Church, Lincoln.

Visitation was Nov. 29 at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Lincoln.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to one of the following charities are encouraged: Alan T. Seagren Excellence in Leadership Fund with the University of Nebraska Foundation, the First Lutheran (Lincoln, NE) Church Building Fund or The Landing Scholarship Fund.
