Scrapbookers have a good time designed for weekend-long event

RANDOLPH — From ribbons and badges to tiles and borders, Randolph’s been pasting, sticking and cropping memories for 10 years.

Now that’s something to stick in a scrapbook.

Jeri Gubbels and Brandy Winkelbauer attended their first scrapbooking event in Norfolk and were hooked.

“We felt like it was something we could benefit from here and we decided to give it a whirl,” Gubbels said as the duo organized their own event called “Croppin’ with ROAR.”

Ten years later, they’re still at it with a weekend-long scrapbooking event scheduled every February and August.

The next “Croppin’ with ROAR” event will take place Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28 at the city auditorium. The money raised at the event will support ROAR (Reaching Out Around Randolph) community events.

Each participant is provided with an 8-foot table to spread out their scrapbook supplies. Tables are lined up to face each other to easier accommodate for socialization while they work.

The event averages about 30 people, Gubbels said.

“Groups of women from Creighton, Hartington, Yankton, Neligh, even Omaha, Sioux City, Fremont, really all from all over, come to the event,” Gubbels said. “We get ideas from each other.”

Some aren’t there for the scrapbooking but instead bring a different craft project or embroidery, Gubbels said.

Jenny Higgins of Neligh will be teaching a class on how to create a two-page layout. Two vendors will also be at the event to sell scrapbooking supplies - The Scrap Room of Randolph and Creative Memories of LeMars, Iowa.

Event T-shirts will also be for sale with the slogan, “Scrapbooking reminds us life has been good.”

The event atmosphere is festive with much visiting, background music and food a part of the weekend.
