Wausa TeamMates recognizes Mentors

WAUSA — The Wausa TeamMates chapter plans to celebrate National Mentoring Month Jan. 21st through their Mentor Recognition Event.

The event kicks off at 1 p.m., with a special presentation to elementary students about the TeamMates Mentoring Program by former TeamMates mentee and current TeamMates Central Office staff member, Anna Flores. Right now, Wausa TeamMates has 20 students actively involved in the program. Mentees can be nominated through a parent, a school staff person, or through self-nomination.

After speaking with students, representatives from the Wausa Team-Mates Chapter and the TeamMates Central Office will speak to members of the major businesses in the community in hopes of recruiting more mentors for youth. Their goal is to recruit 5 more mentors by the end of the school year.

At 5:30, the current mentor/mentee matches of Wausa TeamMates will come together for a Match Dinner, and end with a special recognition between the girls’ and boys’ basketball games. Stick around for the “Chuck A Duck” contest during halftime of the boys’ basketball game — the chapter will be raising money and awareness.

“We have 20 mentors working with 20 students in Wausa Public Schools. They spend their time working with various games, crafts, etc. but most importantly just being there and being a friend the student can count on. We constantly have students being recommended or asking to be in our program. We just need more mentors to continue to have a positive impact for our kids,” Darren Vanness, Wausa TeamMates Board President.

During the 2018-2019 school year, TeamMates served more than 10,000 youth in more than 170 communities across Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Wyoming and Iowa. Mentors meet with their mentees one-on-one in school, once a week, during the academic year.

The TeamMates Mentoring Program would love an opportunity to share the mission of the program with the community. With your help, we can be one step closer to serving 12,000 youth by 2020 and be considered part of the “Gold Standard” of school-based mentoring programs.
