Work is underway on softball field maintenance

RANDOLPH — Community volunteers were able to complete prep work to keep costs low on a maintenance project at the park’s softball field.

Rich Olson of Randolph, assisted by Corby Robinson, donated his time and equipment to grade and level the outfield prior to hydro-seeding work this week.

“Vendor bids we received were very pricey,” said City Administrator Ben Benton. “The only way this project got done was due to help from the community.”

The softball outfield had not been properly maintained over the years and it was starting to show, Benton said.

“The playing surface wasn’t safe with dips and holes - trip hazards,” he said. “It was definitely underwater a couple of times, too.”

The hydro-seeding company hired - McCume Landscaping of Gretna - was recommended by the city’s Floodplain Project contractor Shinn-Kellogg, who used the company to re-seed some areas as part of that project.

The hydro-seeding will be covered by funds already budgeted from Randolph’s Park Board.

McCume will be at the field to complete the work this week.
