Wausa’s annual Smorgasbord week has arrived

WAUSA — It’s finally here! The week you’ve been waiting for all year! Wausa’s Annual Smorgasbord is this week Saturday, Oct. 26 from 5-7 p.m. Friends, family and many out of town guests will be here in Wausa to enjoy this festive celebration.

The Smorgasbord committee is busy finalizing all the details as the tables are being set up and adorned with colorful Scandinavian decorations. Dancers have been rehearsing. Kitchens throughout the community are buzzing with activity as the cooks prepare delicious Swedish delicacies. You won’t want to miss Wausa’s distinctive annual event!

Did you get your ticket yet? It’s not too late. They are available at Commercial State Bank, Main Street Grocery and Wausa Lockers. Prices for the meal are $18 for adults and $8 for children in Kindergarten – age 10. Workers’ tickets all need to be picked up at Commercial State Bank. Be sure to pick yours up if you haven’t already done so. Thank you!

When first arriving at Smorgasbord, you will be greeted in the upper auditorium and entertained with music, lively conversation, and local Swedish adult and children dancers. Downstairs the feast awaits, with waiters and waitresses in Swedish costume ready to assist you to a brightly decorated table. Egg coffee servers will refill your empty cups and water glasses.

A table will be provided upstairs for those who are unable to make it downstairs. A menu will be provided, and a plate will be brought up to them. For those Wausa residents unable to attend, dinner can be delivered to their door.  Copies of the carryout menu are available at Commercial State Bank and the Countryside Villa assisted living facility.  If you are using the delivery option, please make your menu choices at time of purchase. Delivery orders are due by Friday, Oct. 25, by 3 p.m., and meals will be delivered between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m., on the day of Smorgasbord.

For our wonderful cooks, who so lovingly prepare all our Smorgasbord food—the traditional Smorgasbord recipes are at the Main Street Grocery. Be sure to pick up the recipe for your assigned dish and use that specific recipe when preparing your food for the Smorgasbord. Following those recipes closely will allow all our guests to enjoy the same delicious Smorgasbord experience. Thank you so much for your help! We couldn’t do it without you!

On Saturday afternoon, young people will be waiting in the alley behind the auditorium to carry the prepared food to the basement. We ask you to enter the alley behind the auditorium from Sherman Street. Most of the dishes can be dropped off anytime that afternoon, 1:30-4, when youth will be available to assist you. The scalloped potatoes need to be dropped off no earlier than 4 p.m., and the people who made brown beans have been given specific times for their food delivery.

If you have any questions, please call Cristi Munter (402-223-9158) or Joni Burns (402-360-3107).

The Smorgasbord would not be possible without the diligent efforts of the entire community. Wausa can be proud of this wonderful event.  Not only does it display the rich heritage of the community, but it provides residents an opportunity to work together towards a common goal. Wausa’s adults and youth work together to make the Smorgasbord successful. Profits from the Smorgasbord go directly back into the community for projects and scholarships.

We are excited to see you at the Smorgasbord Saturday.
