There’s a new cub in town

Laurel convenience store changes hands

LAUREL — Laurel will be treated to the “beary best in convenience” as the Corner Mart has changed ownership to Cubby’s.

The business, owned by Greg and Steve Urwiler since 1999, was sold and Cubby’s took over March 1.

“It’s time to retire,” Greg Urwiler said. “When something breaks down, it’s someone else’s problem.”

Urwiler said he’s been semi-retired since the fertilizer arm of the business was sold in 2012 and the fuel/propane business in 2016. The last was the convenience store which was sold to Cubby’s.

The business will be re-branded in the coming weeks but that’s not the only changes that customers can expect, said Manager Dennis Hart.

The most exciting change, he said, is the addition of Godfather’s Pizza and Chester’s Chicken to the hot foods available at the convenience store.

“There’s a little bit of eat-in but it’s mostly take out,” Hart said.

Other food items they carry may change but he doesn’t expect any drastic changes to what the convenience store currently offers.

Many things will remain the same at the longtime business.

For starters, pumps will remain with the Cenex brand.

The hours will also remain the same – 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; and 5:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Hart will stay on as manager and all staff remain as well. Hart said he’s currently hiring for all positions. Hart said he recognizes that change can be difficult

Hart said he recognizes that change can be difficult for some, but people have been receptive to Cubby’s so far.

Urwiler said Cubby’s is known for their involvement in the communities in which they do business.

“You’ve got to look out for the community on different things,” he said. “And they’ve been good to work with.”

Cubby’s currently owns 20 locations in Nebraska and has holdings throughout the Midwest, specializing in convenience stores, truck plazas, and grocery.

As the Urwilers leave the business, they want to thank customers for their patronage over the past 21 years.

“The community has been really good and always been behind us,” he said.
