Sunrise Salon celebrates 15 years in business

OSMOND — Kayla Hoffman, owner and stylist of Sunrise Salon, is celebrating her 15th year in business. Kayla opened her business in February of 2005. She received her training at Bahner College of Hairstyling in Fremont and her first day there, coincidentally, was on Sept. 11, 2001. Kayla shares the following information:

“I remember it all so clearly. I was so excited to receive my huge duffel bag of my salon supplies. It felt like Christmas morning at age 5 again! I remember all of us beauty school students were digging salon supplies out of our bags and chatting away getting to know each other when the buzzer on the intercom went off. Then a voice came over it and said the devastating news that the twin towers were attacked. We all went sprinting out of the room to the lobby area where the TV was. We just stood there in shock, tears running down our faces . . . so much emotion running through us. The rest of the day was a blur. Many students ended up going home to be with their loved ones that day. Like they say, ‘A day that will not be forgotten.’

Kayla graduated cosmetology school in 2002 as salutatorian of the class. She then decided to go back to Bahners and attend barber school, finishing in six months as valedictorian of her class. During that time, she had a temporary hair license that permitted her to work in a salon during non-beauty school hours. She also worked nights and weekends as a Wal-mart cashier. After graduating barber school in 2003, she moved to Norfolk and worked in a salon for two years.

Kayla grew up in Brunswick and went to school in Plainview. On Oct. 4, 2003, she married Terry Hoffman of Osmond. The couple bought his grandpa’s house in town and decided to add on a salon to the back of the house.

“It was built by Terry, me, many loving family members and some amazing friends,” Kayla said. “It took just over a year to build, but on Feb. 15, 2005, my doors were open for business! Not only were hair services provided, but Barb Reineke worked with me as a nail tech at Sunrise Salon for six years before she retired from nails. Barb and I made a fantastic team!”

Terry has worked in Norfolk at Continental for 19 years. The couple has three children: Callie, 13, Piper, 11, and Emmett, 7, who attend St, Mary’s School in Osmond. Kayla also has a second job as a jazzercise instructor in Plainveiw where she teaches four classes a week.

“I can’t believe how fast 15 years have gone by! I have been a hairstylist for a total of 19 years and so much has changed. I have seen and done so many hair trends from mullets, to the bowl-cut, to short tight perms, to feathers in the hair, rainbow hair and now the mens’ comb-over is back in style. I can say one thing, my job is never boring! And it keeps me up with the latest fashion trends. It has been a terrific 15 years with you all. I have been busy since the day my door opened!  I am truly blessed to have my little successful business in Osmond! I look forward to many years to come!”
