Relay for Life will go virtual this year

RANDOLPH — The annual Cedar County Relay for Life event will look a bit different this year.

The original schedule has been scrapped and replaced with a Virtual Luminaria Drive Through on Sunday, August 30 from 5-7 p.m. in Randoph.

The luminaria event will begin at the Randolph City Swimming pool and then head south and then west in front of the Veterans Memorial, before heading north again. The length of the drive all depends on how many luminarias are sold.

The live event was originally slated for Aug. 29.

“We are begging for people to purchase a luminaria in honor of someone who is and has battled cancer or in memory of a loved one who has lost their battle to this disease,” said Sandra Kuhlman, who is one of the organizers for the Cedar County Relay for Life.

The luminarias are $10 for each name. Anyone wanting to purchase a luminaria should contact Lois (Ron) Lammers of Hartington, Trisha Reifenrath of Laurel, or Sandra Kuhlman of Randolph.

Also, there will not be any T-shirt give-aways this year.

“I feel really sorry for everyone who has been looking forward to getting them but it just won’t happen this year. I want to truly thank all of our sponsors who have already so generously given their dollars to this cause,” Kuhlman said.

Even though the event has changed, the fund-raising is still needed, Kuhlman said.

“Our only way of getting donations this year is for the people to donate or buy a luminaria,” she said.

Kuhlman said gift bags will still be available for the survivors that they have reached out to and they will be able to pick them up at the start of the Drive Through. Anyone with questions is urged to email
