Randolph’s Civil war heroes are honored

RANDOLPH — The relatives of four Civil War veterans buried in the Randolph Cemetery got their chance Saturday to tell their stories.

A special ceremony honoring the last Civil War soldier of Cedar County was conducted by the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War to honor Edward Leicy, who died June 5, 1939 at a rural Randolph farm.

Leicy’s relatives and the relatives of  Civil War veterans Frederick Weber, NH Dowling and John McClain, all  long-time citizens of Randolph, were on hand to talk about their ancestors.  

This Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War - Department of Nebraska is identifying the last Union soldier from each of Nebraska’s 93 counties. So far, special ceremonies have been held in five Nebraska counties.  SUVCW member Norm Weber, Wisner, said the group will have similar ceremonies in Nebraska’s 88 counties, as well.

At the conclusion of Saturday’s event, a bronze GAR star flag holder was placed at each grave.  Each medallion has a QR code linked to the SUVCW website that will have a listing of  Nebraska’s Last Soldiers.
