Randolph program is designed to honor local veterans

RANDOLPH — Plans are currently being put in place for the Memorial Day celebration in Randolph.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday set aside as a time for remembering the people who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day, after the American Civil War in 1868.

The Randolph community Memorial Day program will be held Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m., at the Randolph Jr./Sr. High School Commons area.

The Randolph High School band will play patriotic music for the event.

This year’s guest speaker will be Larry Gerit, past state commander of Nebraska, VFW Post 10727 of Bellevue. Also, this year’s Voice of Democracy winners are Alex Heiman and Tyson Junck who will both be speaking, also.

Special cemetery services will be held after the school program. Those attending can proceed to the St. Frances Cemetery, then to the City Cemetery and on to Rose Hill Cemetery for the ceremonies.

The names of the military deceased will be read at each cemetery, with the accompaniment of a 21-gun salute.

The community will be spruced up for the event with American flags, which are being put out by local volunteers.
