New Council member is appointed

RANDOLPH - A new councilman was appointed at the Randolph City Council meeting last week.

Ted Stubbs will replace Kalynda Kuhl on the council. She moved out of the city limits and resigned last month.

In a special meeting, Stubbs and two other contenders - Aaron Nielsen and Julie Kint - gave prepared remarks to the council. The council then entered into executive session and announced Stubbs as Kuhl’s successor.

He was appointed, sworn in and participated in his first council meeting all on the same night.

As part of the regular meeting, council members discussed progress in cleaning out the Cedar Motel with city crews actively working to remove contents and trash left behind by vacated tenants.

Tons of trash have already been removed and this past weekend, an additional 30-yard dumpster was filled as clean out continues of the 20 rooms in the 39,000-square-foot space.

City Administrator Ben Benton said asbestos has been found in the motel’s floor and ceiling.

Once the rooms are empty, Olson Pest Control will spray for pests so that asbestos can be abated, he said.

The council met as the Community Development Association and approved the asbestos abatement and the accepting bids to sell the motel’s metal roof.

Council member Janelle Biernbaum said an individual interested in buying the motel will attend next month’s meeting.
