LAUREL — The Laurel Library Board has added a new member, David McMahan, dean of students at Wayne State College.

McMahan said this is a great way to get involved in the community and do something to help others.

“I was interested in joining an enthusiastic group of service-oriented individuals who strive to serve the community and the school through their efforts,’’ McMahan said of the reason he joined the six-person library board. “We are working on a reading corner installation, reading groups, summer programs, and already looking to the Festival of Lights for the winter holidays. The board is focused on making the library more accessible to all users and meeting the needs of the community. From hosting clinics on crafts to developing plans for construction projects, the board is focused on making the library a destination space.”

McMahan is married to Selda Vasquez-McMahan.

Born and raised in Tulsa, he went to college at the University of Houston-University Park; did post-graduate work at Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and then completed academic work at the University of Tulsa College of Law. He earned a bachelor of science in sociology/psychology from the University of Houston and a juris doctorate with high honors from the University of Tulsa College of Law.

During law school, he clerked with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Oklahoma, Doerner, Saunders, Daniel and Anderson, L.L.P., and the City of Tulsa Attorney’s Office.

He started at WSC in June 2017. He serves as the dean of students and oversees strategic direction, comprehensive planning and leadership.

McMahan serves as an adjunct instructor for a graduate counseling course in higher education student services programs.

He said he most enjoys helping students work through issues which may otherwise impede their ability to attain their educational aspirations at Wayne State.

Beyond daily interaction helping students work through issues of concern, I serve as the adviser to Rugby Teams which includes the 11-time national champion women’s team,’’ McMahan said.
