Long-time Spanish teacher is set to retire from LCC

LAUREL — Marta Victor will be saying “Adios” to her teaching career as she retires as the Spanish teacher at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge.

This is her 35th year at LCC but as an alumnus of Laurel-Concord – grades 8-12 – you could say she has been here for 40 years.

She teaches Exploratory Spanish as well as Spanish through four levels – 7th through 12th grades. She taught 7th grade English her first year at LCC. But her first teaching position was at Wayne Community Schools where she started the Spanish program there.

“My college professor (at Wayne State College) had been trying for years to get a Spanish program in Waynethey had German at the time-so I was lucky enough to be around when they decided to add Spanish to their foreign language opportunities,” Victor said, adding that she taught there for three years before coming back to teach at her alma mater.

Even though she’s been a mainstay at LCC for the last 35 years, she impacted hundreds of other students from nine other schools for many years due to distance learning at Allen, Wynot, Coleridge (before consolidating), Newcastle, Humphrey, Prague, Winside, West Point Central Catholic and Winnebago.

She also taught an “encore” year at Wayne – teaching two Spanish I classes in the morning before teaching at LCC in the afternoon.

After more than three decades of teaching, Victor said she will take away some deeply fond memories.

“I will always remember the friendly competitions when we played review games in class, our Spanish Club celebrations, making it to state one year when I was assistant One-Act coach and sharing many laughs with students and colleagues,” she said.

Victor looks forward to retirement and spending more time with her grandchildren – she will have 10 by the end of the summer.

She also has projects to do around her home.

“I know my farmer husband has some of his own plans for me that involve driving a tractor,” she said.
