Local photographer enjoys her time judging 4H entries

LAUREL — “Take a picture, it’ll last longer.”

Nearly every teen has utilized this line when they have felt someone has stared their direction for too long. It is known that pictures last physically longer than moments, which is why photography became a popular thing.

Cassandra Kvols has been making moments last longer since she was 14. Kvols, Laurel, took up photography as a teen and has found joy behind the lens ever since.

In the past, she has spent time as a portrait photographer for families and individuals alike. Most recently, she has been a freelance photographer for Nebraska Life Magazine. This endeavor, which she’s been doing for about five years, has allowed some of her photographs of the Laurel area to be published in the statewide magazine several times.

Kvols is also using her knowledge and skills to help invest in the next generation through the 4-H organization. She’s been an area 4-H Photography judge for five years, now. This year, she is hoping to increase the number of counties she helps.

The 4-H mission is to provide kids with community, mentors, and learning opportunities to develop the skills they need to create positive change in their lives. Kvols’ advice to aspiring photographers, especially 4-H students is to “push yourself to do better and never stop learning. Remember that composition is important. Composition is how the arrangement of the photograph captures the eye of the viewer. If you want to win yourself a top ribbon and a judge’s special recognition, you have to have excellent composition.”

Kvols also encourages beginner photographers to “sketch” with their camera. “Take pictures of everything. Sketch with your camera and find your eye for photography.”
