Legion members receive awards

The regular meeting of American Legion Post 326 was conducted by Commander Dave Hamm on Tuesday, Aug. 11. The Colors were presented, and the POW/MIA flagwas placed by Vice Commander Dave Kruse. The Pledge of Al-legiance was recited by all pres-ent and a prayer was offered by Chaplain Wes Kumm. There were fiveofficersand 17 members in attendance.  Howard Timmerman was remembered on sick call.The commander reminded the membership that the night’s meeting was the Legion’s annual membership kick-off meeting and the mountain oyster feed. He thanked all the Legionnaires and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) who prepared the oysters for cooking: Tom Borst, Lee Bartz, Jerry Den-nis, Kevin Pfanstiel, Wayne and Doug Koehler, Roger Blunck, Dave Blunck, Jay Reikofski, Guy Anderson, Don Haselhorst, Dan Timmerman, Rod Kollars and Ron Stech.Members discussed again sponsoring a Legion Family Picnic on the second Thursday of August 2021, which may be combined with the SAL’s annual picnic.The next regular Meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 8.On Friday, Sept. 11, city flagpoles will be placed by the SAL in remembrance of the World Trade Center attack in 2001.Military Honors were to be held graveside at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, for Glenn Sazama at the city cemetery.  The Honor Guard will meet at the Post at 12:45 p.m.The Post will again donate $50 for “Gifts for Yanks who Gave.”A permanent flagbox will be placed in honor of Norm Lorenz for the public to place flagsfor destruc-tion. The site is to be determined.A report from Rod Kollars re-garding the County Legion Bingo Booth was given.  A number of donations have been pledged. The project estimate to fixand repair it is $1,500-2,000.The commander read a thank you card from Brady Stech and the rest of the American Legion baseball team thanking the Legion for al-lowing them to have a team this year and financially supporting it Fifty-year Certificates of Continuous Membership were awarded to Dr. David Johnson, Dallas Steckelberg, Dennis Hoffman, Denis Schneckloth and Michael Steffen, and a 60-year certificate to Vernon Buol. Ed Clayton received the “Cantankerous Award” from the county. It has been passed on for many years to county Legion officersWith no further business to dis-cuss, Commander Hamm closed the meeting, with a closing prayer by Chaplain Kumm. Hamm then invited everyone to enjoy the mountain oyster feed cooked and served by Tom Borst, Dave Kruse, Jerry Dennis, Dave Schoenauer, Tom Kruse, Kevin Pfanstiel, Red Aschoff and Don Haselhorst.— Ray Collins Adjutant
