LCC athletes earn medals at Lewis and Clark Conference track
LAUREL — Laurel-Concord-Coleridge hosted the 2023 edition of the Lewis and Clark Conference Track and Field Meet at Haskell Field on April 29.
Ponca came away with the team titles in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions, with Plainview coming in second on both sides of the competition.
The Bears wound up fifth in the team standings while the Lady Bears placed ninth.
Dan Puppe won two individual conference titles in the 110-meter high hurdles, where he used a
14.54-second clocking to win rather handily, and he cleared the bar in the pole vault at 12 feet to earn another conference gold medal.
He also teamed up with Shane Benson, Gibson Roberts and Carter Kvols to circle the track in
46.18 seconds to earn first in the
4-by-100 relay for LCC.
Kvols placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:20.39 and placed seventh in the 100 meters at
12.01 seconds.
Tyler Olson placed sixth in the 3,200 while Carter Korth was eighth in the 200.
Caleb Erwin took advantage of the conference handing out eight medals in each event, taking eighth in the 200 and seventh in the long jump after hitting the sand in 18 feet, 10.50 inches.
The 4-by-800 team of Olson, Andrew Sohler, Landen Leonard and Carter Korth came in fifth with a time of 9:14.21.
The Lady Bears were paced by Tali Erwin, who won the high jump after clearing the bar at
5-00. She also placed second in the 100-meter hurdles after having the fifth-best time in the preliminaries.
“Winning as a sophomore is pretty cool,” Erwin said. “I need to just keep working harder and working on my events to get as far as I can get this season.”
Berniece McCorkindale grabbed her second conference title in a row with a shot put toss of 35-10.50.
“Throwing the shot is about getting speed across the ring and using the right technique,” McCorkindale said. “I’ve been working hard on my technique the past few years and I’m starting to see the rewards. I want to keep going forward.”
Julia Johnson placed seventh in the pole vault, as did Karli Ferris in the triple jump.
Addy Hoeppner crossed the line eighth in the 3,200-meter run and Brynlee Stanley earned eighth in the high jump.
The Lady Bear 4-by-800 relay team of Kate Tasler, Karli Ferris, Camryn Sohler and Hoeppner placed fifth with a time of
12:28.89.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge is set to return to Haskell Field on May 4 for the Winside Invitational.
Districts are set for May 11 in Hartington.
