Laurel Vets Club is getting a big facelift

LAUREL — A downtown fixture is getting a facelift.

The Laurel Vets Club, which was formed in 1994, is home to the American Legion Post 54 and the VFW Post 4504.

The building is the former True Value building and was purchased in 1996. The club held its first meeting there in March of 1996.

The two clubs have a combined total of 85 members and are always welcoming new people to join.

To be a part of the VFW, one must have served in the war zone during the time of the war.

The Legion’s requirements are less strict and require military service for membership.

Lloyd Luedtke and Gene Twiford are the contacts for the Legion, while Regg Ward and Dwayne Freeman are the contacts for the VFW.

The Legion and VFW Auxiliaries play a big role in the success of the Vets Club. Claire Leger is the representative for the VFW auxiliary and Sheryl Luedtke for the Legion auxiliary.

In February of this year, members decided it was time to update the flooring in the kitchen.

As is the case with many projects, one thing soon leads to another, though. The bathrooms then received a complete overhaul with new flooring, vanities, partitions, lights, and an updated ceiling being installed.

The walls of the bathroom are complete with a tiled patriotic border.

The building is primarily utilized as a meeting spot for the veterans and auxiliaries.

The back room houses canes, walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, and other various pieces of medical equipment that is loaned or given away to anyone who has a need.

The way the building is set up, it can accommodate events of up to 200 people with a bar and dance floor. Every Friday in November through March the Vets Club holds a social gathering open to the public.

The Vets Club intends to have an open house once the renovations are complete.
