Knox County 4-H’ers Speak Out Virtually

CENTER — The Knox County 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held on Monday, May 11 virtually with twelve 4-H members participating. The Public Speaking Contest gives each 4-H member an opportunity to speak before a group. 4-H members learn how to develop their speaking skills and gain self-confidence. These are skills the 4-H member will use their entire life!

The results are as follows (ages as of January 1):

Clover Kids Division (ages 5-7): Special Clover Kids Ribbons were awarded. Tucker Hanefeldt of Center recited the Pledge of Allegiance; Grant Marsh of Crofton read Flat Stanley; Reagan Novacek of Verdigre shared a story about her Dog “Ace;” and Meredith Wortmann of Crofton read the story “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out!” by Shel Silverstein.

Junior Division (ages 8-10 must present an original speech relating to 4-H from 1-3 minutes): Trophy winner was Claire Marsh of Crofton with her speech “How 4-H is Going to Get Me My Dream Job.” Receiving a purple ribbon was Peyton Bratetic of Bloomfield with his speech “Bike Safety;” and Cecilia Wortmann of Crofton with her speech “Digital Etiquette.”

Intermediate Division (ages 11-13 must present an original speech relating to 4-H from 3-5 minutes): Trophy winner was Ave McFarland of Bloomfield with her speech “The Egg on Your Plate.” Receiving a purple ribbon was Marshall Bratetic of Bloomfield with his speech “4-H Pledge;” and Sophia Wortmann of Crofton with her speech “Babysitting: The Good, the Bad and the Stinky!”

Senior Division (ages 14-18 must present an original speech relating to 4-H from 5-8 minutes): Trophy winner was Taylor Arens of Crofton with her speech “Bunnies to Business.” Receiving a purple ribbon was Elizabeth Wortmann of Crofton with her speech “What’s the Dirt on Dirt?.

Public Service Announcement Division (PSA):

Intermediate Division: Trophy winner was Marshall Bratetic of Bloomfield.

Junior Division: Trophy winner was Peyton Bratetic of Bloomfield.

Representing Knox County at the Virtual Statewide Public Speaking Contest will be trophy and purple ribbon winners in the senior and intermediate divisions.
