Interest sought in rejuvenating Osmond Community Club

OSMOND — What is a community without a Community Club? Osmond has not had an active Community Club for several years now, and the effects are beginning to show.

There was no Easter egg hunt this spring for the first time in 44 years. In addition, the “Christmas in Osmond” event, which was begun as a joint venture by HOME Team and the Community Club and which has been held since 2012, will not be observed this year, although there will be a “Santa Day” on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Osmond General Hospital activity center.

It was also only through the efforts of a few people in both organizations and the cooperation of the Osmond FBLA and Rita Aschoff at Osmond General Care Center that the Halloween costume judging contest was held this year.

Osmond Community Club was organized in 1934, although other variations of the group mentioned in the Osmond Republican were active in 1910 and then from 1925 through 1929. The organization has been responsible for many events and activities through the years: an annual pancake feed, the Easter egg hunt, Summerfest, Halloween costume judging contest, Santa Day, Downtown Christmas or “Christmas in Osmond,” Christmas lighting contest, Community Calendar. The organization also provides a scholarship each year, with proceeds contributed mainly by the pancake feed.

Appreciation goes to Bernice Blecha for all her efforts throughout the many years of service. Her husband, Don, was also instrumental in making sure community events were carried through.

The future of the group is now in question, as is its mission: will it be a community service group, an Osmond business promotion group, or something else? The Community Club now needs to recruit new members to decide the future of the group. Volunteers must be willing to give time and effort to continuing or expanding the group’s activities.

Those who are interested are asked to contact Regina Lorenz at (402) 748-3666 or (402) 748-3564, or Doug Ketelsen, (402) 748-3919. Depending on interest, a reorganizational meeting will be held at some point in the future.
