Great weather helps make for a perfect night in Laurel

LAUREL — Everything was in place early Thursday for the start of Laurel’s big night.

Decorations had been placed. The lights were all lit. The goodies had been baked, and the local stores all spiffed up for the big night.

There was only one last detail to make sure everything would go off without a hitch — Old Man Winter.

The weather turned out to be near perfect as hundreds of people showed up for the Laurel Chamber Community Club’s Night of Lights event here.

The 11th annual event featured open houses around town and a downtown Christmas tree lighting ceremony by Santa himself.

Santa proved to be the star of the show as kids and parents formed a long line at Main Street Apothecary to visit with the Jolly Old Elf.

Other activities for the night included a photo booth, take-home craft kits at the city office, and music at the Senior Center.

The LCC Bear Squad also performed in front of the City Auditorium.

The evening drew to a close with everyone packing the auditorium for the holiday punch card raffle drawing.

The first Night of Lights was held Dec. 2, 2008.  That first night of lights event was a success with 23 businesses participating with special sales, drawings and refreshments.  Santa rode into town on a fire truck to light the Christmas tree.
