Golgotha Church celebrates 125th anniversary

WAUSA — Golgotha Lutheran Church will be celebrating their 125th Anniversary this Sunday. There will be a Divine Service at 10:30, and following the service there will be an anniversary meal. The public is invited to attend.

It was as early as 1884 that some of those who later became members of Golgotha Lutheran Church were served by a Lutheran pastor. The Rev. Theodore Moellering of Bazile Mills occasionally preached in the homes of scattered families living east of Creighton. Later Fairview Schoolhouse, seven miles east and two miles north of Creighton, was used by these few families as their house of worship.

In the following years a number of German Lutheran families settled southwest of Wausa, and they expressed interest in worshiping with their fellow Lutherans further west. It was decided by all concerned that services were to be held in a place most centrally located. The school house of District 132, one-half mile north and one-half mile east of the present location of Golgotha Lutheran Church, was chosen as a meeting place.

On Feb. 16, 1896, a cold and stormy day, after the regular bi-weekly service, a special meeting was held for the purpose of organizing a congregation. A model constitution was presented to the members present, which was adopted and signed by nine of them.

The nine charter members were: William Boldt, Christ Repenning, Jacob Peters, Ehler Hoppe, Henry Anders, August Gieselmann, Karl Krugmann, Frank Krugmann, and William Krohn, Sr.

The dedication of the first Golgotha Lutheran Church building was celebrated on July 15, 1900.

This building burned to the ground when on May 20, 1914 lightning struck the first church and totally destroyed it.

The dedication of the second building was celebrated on a very cold December 27, 1914.

The members of Golgotha Lutheran Church give thanks to God that by His grace and blessing many generations have heard the saving message of Jesus who died on a cross for our sins outside the city of Jerusalem at a site called Golgotha. This same Jesus rose from the dead, and He lives to bring forgiveness and eternal life to all who will believe in Him. Though our world has seen many changes in the last 125 years, the Lord never changes. His truth endures to all generations. His steadfast love and mercies are new to us every morning. Great is His faithfulness.
