FFA students tell Board members about their experiences

COLERIDGE — A room full of blue FFA jackets met LCC School Board members on Nov. 11 as they assembled for their regular meeting in Coleridge.

Members who had attended the National FFA convention paid school board members a visit to thank them and others, and tell of their experiences in Indianapolis.

“We want to thank the school board, FFA alumni and our parents for this trip,’’ said Elizabeth Lipp. “The convention was attended by 70,000. It was good to see everyone moving together for the better of our country and agriculture.’’

Lipp said she was one of the students attending the Blue Room with leading businesses in agriculture set up to interact with students.

“We were able to ask questions and the businesses were their to educate,’’ she said. “I watched the competition for conducting meetings. It was interesting to watch group parliamentary procedures because we are going to learn to use them. We talked with NASA about how they are growing plants in space to keep astronauts healthy and not deficient in vitamins and nutrients.”

Lipp said it was good to see people at NASA working together with agriculture.

“I attended the rodeo. We also saw the top awards for FFA presented,’’ said Landen Boysen in his thank you speech. “We attended the Expo with businesses like John Deere. It was good to see what’s new.’’

“To see 70,000 people in blue jackets gave you a sense of unity,’’ said Samantha Pehrson. “Attending three sessions, each had a keynote speaker. I got to watch parliamentary procedure. We also toured the Indy Speedway.’’

Caleb Lipp related the experience of a 16-hour bus ride to reach the convention, yet expressed his gratitude.

“It was cool to see everything you can do in FFA.’’

Kylie Kempf said a memorable aspect of the convention for her was a speaker who talked about facing your fears.

“I was interested in the variations of agriculture jobs,’’ Brianna Campbell said. “It was different than when I attended as a freshman. It was interesting to see how physics is applied to cars since I am studying that.’’

Highlights for Jacqueline Kempf included the “Conquer Your Fears’’ topic, the Indy car factory and the opportunity to ride in one of the cars.

Board member Jay Hall thanked the adviser, alumni and parents for their role in the trip.

Student Board member Kylie Kempf gave a report to the board. A few highlights that she mentioned included the FCCLA went to Wayne State College and attended leadership meetings and worked on the backpack program and One-act-play students have started practice.

Also Monday, Board members were told Angie Hall will be leaving her job as high school secretary at LCC. Jessica Wilson was hired as a para for the elementary.

The Board also got an update on Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports.

“The elementary has been working on positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS). The focus is on bathrooms and hallways. Each time we have a student doing something good we make a note of it and collect it in a bowl. We have collected 3,000,’’ said Paige Parsons, elementary principal.
