Downtown Revitalization Project set to begin April 19

LAUREL — The long-planned Laurel Downtown Revitalization Project is scheduled to start soon.

On Thursday, March 25, a pre-construction meeting was held at the Laurel City Auditorium with project engineers, JEO and construction manager Penro Construction, and several other entities involved with the project.

A public Open House at the City Auditorium followed the meeting.

Several of the downtown business owners attended, or had a representative for their business come to the Open House to ask questions and get more information.

The Revitalization Project is set to begin April 19.

Phase 1 will begin on Spruce Street with work being done between Second and Fourth Streets.

This road closure is expected to last from 6-8 weeks.  The work is being done to replace infrastructure to improve the water drainage for the downtown area.

Phase II is expected to get underway in early to mid-May, and will start at the east end of Second Street.   This will close Second Street from Spruce to Cedar Street.

Phase III is planned for mid-June. This phase of the project will close Second Street from Cedar St. to Alma St.

During the course of the next several months, the sewer pipes, streets and sidewalks will be replaced in Laurel’s downtown area.

The alleys between Elm and Cedar Street will be one-way from west to east, and will be marked accordingly as the project progresses.

JEO will have monthly progress meetings that will be held at the City Auditorium, and these dates will be posted around Laurel. The Advocate will also post construction updates and photos of the work.
