Christmas lighting contest should really brighten things up

LAUREL — A scene from a famous Christmas movie could be very appropriate around Laurel this Holiday season.

“Is your house on fire, Clark?”

“No, Aunt Bethany, those are Christmas lights!”

If you haven’t seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, you’re missing out. The 1989 classic plays on television every year to the enjoyment of all ages.

The flick is filled with puns, jokes, and crude humor, which is why people prefer the broadcasted version that is censored.

Area businesses and 21 Laurel homes and one in Concord are competing this week for the Laurel Chamber Community Club’s “Clark Griswold” award.

The prestigious award comes with a years worth of bragging rights and chamber bucks for the winning home and a free chamber membership for the businesses.

Laurel Economic Development Coordinator Chris Rasmussen is excited about the level of participation this year.

“In light of everything happening, we had to make changes to our Night of Lights event. The chamber is elated with the response to the competition.”

This year Night of Lights will also feature a word search scramble and the option for kids to drop off letters to Santa downtown.
