Christmas isn’t a happy time for everyone

LAUREL — Many times during the holiday season there are those in our community who put on a brave face, because as the song says, Christmas is supposed to be “the most wonderful time of the year.” For some, the holiday season can be very trying.

Some people struggle this time of the year. Whether it be from losing a loved one, having become an empty-nester, a disappointment in a life event, feeling overwhelmed with all the darkness going on in the world, whatever it may be, some folks will struggle during the holiday season.  

Some may be experiencing what is known as “Seasonal Affective Disorder” also referred to as SAD, a type of seasonal depression.

“It may not be a huge event in our life, it can be anything that is keeping us from the joy, and affecting our relationships with each other and God,” said Pastor Chris Hjelmstad of Concordia Lutheran Church, Concord and First Lutheran Church, Allen.
