Outside sources are sending confusing information to local voters

WAUSA— Knox County Clerk Joanne Fischer is trying to clear up some confusion surrounding this year’s General Election.

Area residents have commented to her that they have been receiving voter registration application forms and other election materials in the mail.

She said area residents might be best advised to simply ignore all of this, though, since Knox County voting is done 100 percent by mail.

“None of these mailings have been sent or endorsed by the Knox County Clerk’s office,” Fischer said. “These mailings are coming from various organizations and causing confusion as they may contain information not relevant to Nebraska dates and deadlines, plus many times the voter is already registered and has not changed their address, name and/or party affiliation.”

Fischer said ballots will be automatically mailed to eligible Knox County registered voters on Oct. 14, 2020.

No application is necessary for registered voters to have their ballot mailed, she said.

“However, if you need your ballot before Oct. 14 and, or, you want your ballot mailed to a different address from your voter registration address, there is an Early Voting Application form.”

That form can be found on page eight of this issue of the Wausa Gazette.

Also, a voter can write a letter to the Knox County Clerk’s Office requesting an early ballot or to have their ballot mailed to a different address.

The completed form or letter can be returned by mail, by fax, by email, or put in the drop box in the front foyer of the Knox County Courthouse.

Fischer said she is doing everything possible to make voting easy, adding that voters can also take a picture of the completed form or letter and email the picture or call her to make arrangements to text the picture.

Anyone wishing to vote at the General Election on Nov. 3 must be registered at the Knox County Clerk’s Office by no later than Friday, Oct. 23, she said. The Knox County Clerk’s Office will remain open until 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 23 for in-person registration, Fischer said.

Any 17-year-olds that will be 18 years of age by Nov. 3, 2020, may register at this time and vote the General Election ballot.

Here are a few other deadline for the upcoming election.

• Oct. 16 — Deadline–Mail-in registration (postmarked); DMV or County Treasurer registration; On-Line registration; application delivered to County Clerk’s Office by someone other than person registering to vote.

Fischer said on-line voter registration can be done at the Knox County website at www.co.knox.ne.us, then to the “Election Information” button on the homepage and then to the NEBRASKA ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION SYSTEM link.
