Am. Legion Post #114, Auxiliary Unit hold October meetings

COLERIDGE — American Legion Post #114 and its Auxiliary, Unit #114, held their October meetings Oct. 5 at the Coleridge Community Building. The units jointly recited the Pledge of Allegiance and divided into their separate meetings.

Chaplain Dolores Meier gave a reading and prayer to begin the Auxiliary meeting followed by standing in silence in memory of our dead. The Preamble of the Constitution of the Auxiliary was jointly recited and President Vicky Gullicksen called the meeting regularly convened.  Secretary Rose Mary Polak called the roll, with nine responding and also read the minutes of the August meeting, which were approved. Treasurer Diane Wemhoff gave the treasurer’s report, also approved as read.

In Old Business, at the August meeting the position of electing a president was tabled and at this meeting Vicky Gullicksen has agreed to keep the position, as well as being president of District III.

Motion was made, seconded and carried to continue collecting ‘lunch money’ even though lunch is no longer served. This will help with paying some of the bills.

In New Business, eight of the usual payments were allowed for: Per capita dues, Vets Home Assessment, Dollar Days, Little Red Schoolhouse, Vets’ Gift Shop, Gift for Yanks Who Gave, Emergency Fund, and Entertainment/Recreation Fund. A poppy order is also being drawn up for the next year’s poppy needs, both small and large poppies.

The Dakota County Convention will be held Oct. 17, in South Sioux City. Social time will begin at 5 p.m., the meeting at 5:30 p.m., and a 6:30 supper will be held. Supper will be a fried chicken dinner, potatoes and gravy, vegetable and dessert for $10.

Dollar Days event will be Nov. 5, at the Norfolk Veterans Home, and Yanks Who Gave will be Dec. 5, also at the Norfolk Home.  The Mid-Year Conference will be Jan. 15-17, 2021, in Columbus. District III Convention will  be at Ponca, March 20, 2021.

A letter was composed and sent to people in the area eligible for Legion or Auxiliary membership. Several responses have already come in and we hope more will join in the near future.

The next meeting will be Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m., at the Coleridge Community Building.
