Coleridge Christmas has something for everyone

COLERIDGE — There’s no doubt that Christmas is for children, but there’s no shame in adults celebrating and having fun, too.

There’s something for everyone - young and old alike - at the annual Christmas in Coleridge celebration Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Coleridge Community Building. Activities start at 5:30 p.m. that evening.

“We try to do things the whole family can be involved in,” said Jacie Burbach, one of 15 members of the Coleridge Community Club which sponsors the annual event.

One of the highlights of the celebration is all of the prizes, drawings and cash given away at the event. Games, sleds and other prizes are generously donated by local businesses.

The club will be loading its wind cash machine with dollar bills for the event again this year. Participants stick their arms in through sleeves in the front of the machine and then have one minute to grab as much cash in their hands as they can.

“You’d swear we were giving a million dollars away with how people react,” Burbach said. “It’s just so fun.”

Another activity that draws a large crowd is Bingo with prizes awarded for winners.

“People just stay all night,” Burbach said. “It’s good quality family fun. All ages played Bingo - little kids through Grandpa and Grandma. We just have a blast.”

Those attending Christmas in Coleridge can also register to win a zerogravity loveseat. Registration will continue at local businesses and the winner will be drawn Dec. 18.

Santa and Mrs. Claus are set to visit from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to hear children’s wishlists.

Rodeo’s will be serving up hot beef sandwiches and a free-will offering will be collected for those eating the meal.

The money collected will be used by the community club to purchase new picnic tables for the city park - essential for the all-class reunion planned for next summer, Burbach said.

“We’re a little group but mighty in power. We try to keep things going in our community with the purpose of giving back,” she said.

Other holiday events are set to start and run through December to keep the holiday spirit stoked.

Starting Dec. 6, people can hunt through town for 12 elf hats. Write down the hats’ locations and turn it into Northeast Nebraska Insurance by Dec. 18 for a chance to earn cash prizes.

The annual Griswold Lighting Contest is open to any resident or business (in town or rural). Registration is required by Dec. 17 for judging set for Dec. 19. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.
