Bears split pair of games with rated teams

LAUREL — The LCC boys basketball team saw two of the state’s best in preparation for the conference tournament and saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end.

On Tuesday, the Bears pulled away in the second half for an 80-54 win over Class D-2 state-rated Osmond in action at the LCC gym.

Osmond hung with the Bears through the first half and only trailed by four at the break, but the Bears came out hot in the third quarter, taking control of the game with a 27-9 third-quarter surge that helped them nail down the win.

Noah Schutte and Izac Reifenrath both had double-doubles to lead the Bears to their 11th straight win. Schutte led the Bears with 24 points and 18 rebounds along with five steals, while Reifenrath chimed in with 20 points and 10 boards. He also led the team with four assists.

Ty Erwin added 18 points, Evan Haisch had 10 and Cael Hartung put in eight points. Erwin had eight boards and three assists, Hartung had three assists and Schutte also had four assists and three steals.

LCC’s winning streak came to an end Thursday in Wakefield, as the Class C-2 state-rated Trojans forced overtime and came away with a 56-53 home win over the Bears.

The game was a tight battle throughout. LCC led by four at intermission, but Wakefield kept it close and got the game to overtime, where they were able to hang on and post the win.

Schutte had 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Bears, with Reifenrath adding 17 points and Erwin putting in 10. Hartung had four points and Haisch put in three.

Hartung had 11 rebounds for LCC. Reifenrath led the team with four assists and six steals, while Erwin had five and Schutte grabbed four.

The Bears, 16-2, were seeded second and hosted the first round of the Lewis & Clark Conference tournament on Monday. Tournament play continues through the finals, set for Monday, Feb. 4 at LCC School.
