Slagles have experienced ups and downs over the years

LAUREL — In 1933, the cost of an average house was a little over $4,000 and a loaf of bread cost a mere seven cents.

The United States was in the midst of the Great Depression — a time when one out of three people was unemployed.

In the midst of these troubling times, two babies were born. Roland (Rollie) David Slagle in West Point to Art and Mary Slagle and Lavonne Faye Lasse to Gus and Mary Lasse in Wisner.

Fifteen miles separated them at birth.

Eighteen years later, April of 1952, during an anniversary party in West Point, cupid shot his arrow and it was love at first glance.
