One of Laurel’s oldest WWII heroes is gone

LAUREL — A local hero quietly slipped away in the night over the weekend.

Lauren D. Johnson, 100, Laurel, died Sunday, Oct. 6 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel. His 100th birthday here back in March turned into quite an occasion.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 4.7 percent of Americans will reach the age of 90 with the majority being women.

Lauren Johnson and Erwin Rastede both beat that statistic. Johnson turned 100 years old March 7 and Rastede turned 100 on May 29.
