Hillcrest Care Center vets are honored by area groups

LAUREL — Veteran’s Day, originally known as Armistice Day, became a national holiday in 1938, first being annually observed in 1926. The day is celebrated on Nov. 11 because this date is the end of World War I. On this day each year, is a time for us to remember and thank all veterans for their service in all branches of armed forces.

The last few years, the American Legion Riders and Quilts of Valor members have collaborated to make this day extra special for veterans in several communities in Northeast NE. The organized group made stops in both the Laurel and Coleridge communities, stopping at Hillcrest Care Center and Park View Haven Nursing Home.

“For me, part of this event is for atonement of the Vietnam War Veterans, especially those who were mistreated upon coming back. Showing up at the nursing facilities is a way to show respect for all vets,” said Duane Schroeder, assistant director of the American Legion Riders.  Schroeder has been an active member for the past nine years.
