Wausa TeamMates celebrates National Mentoring Month

WAUSA — January is National Mentoring month and Wausa is proud to be a part of the TeamMates Mentoring Program. In 1991, Tom and Nancy Osborne started the TeamMates program in an effort to provide support and to show encouragement to school aged youth. The goal of the program is to see youth graduate from high school and pursue post-secondary education. Mentors are volunteers from the community who have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the life of a young person.

Mentors give one hour of their week to give youth a sense of hope, purpose and vision. Wausa’s TeamMates program began in the fall of 2001 with six matches and the idea that every student could benefit from a mentor as another positive influence in his or her life. The Wausa TeamMates have always looked for great students with tremendous potential. In the past 12 years, matches have ranged from the six school children the Wausa Chapter started with to the current 16 matches today. There have been 12 students graduate from the program and seven of these students have received scholarships from the mentoring program. Not only has the Wausa Chapter given out scholarships but it has done various outside activates throughout the years.

The Wausa Chapter celebrated mentoring month Jan. 7 at the Vikings Basketball game. Each mentor and mentee was admitted into the game and received a pop and bag of popcorn from the Chapter. During half time of the boys’ varsity game the matches were introduced to the public as well as the Board members.
