Wausa community receives funds to promote tourism

CENTER —Knox County Supervisors agreed to hand out close to $16,000 to local communities and organizations in order to promote tourism in Knox County.

The money will be dispersed from an account holding funds that have been collected though a county lodging tax.

A three percent lodging tax in an amount close to $32,000 has been collected in Knox County during the last fiscal year – one percent is to be used for promotion and two percent goes towards improvements.

Dale Riesberg, Chairman of the Knox County Visitors Committee, presented the requests and funding recommendations that had been made by the Visitors Committee.

The purpose of the tax is to promote tourism, according to Riesberg.

“It is all about tourism,” Riesberg told the county board members. “The Knox County Visitors Committee received a record number of requests this year.”

The largest disbursement will go towards an effort to bring more visitors into the State Park and encourage them to stay longer.

“The Nebraska Games and Parks have a proposal to put in a wireless router that would be available at the camp sites,” Riesberg said. “People might be willing to stay longer at the camps if they have wireless internet connection.”

An amount of $5,482 was approved for Niobrara State Park.

The funds will be used for the cost of wireless equipment plus the monthly fees for a certain number of months.

A request of $1,000 from Northeast Nebraska RC&D was approved.

“RC&D will be doing a new promo on ‘Wildlife and Wine.’ It should bring in some tourism dollars,” Riesberg said.

The Bloomfield Community Club will receive $1,000 for promotion and a $1,000 which will be used for capital improvements.

“Bloomfield will be updating some of their community signs,” Riesberg said. “They will match with another $1,000.”

Other disbursements this year include:

Wausa Smorgasboard Committee: $500

Wausa Community Club: $500

Center Community: $500

Crofton Community Club: $1,000

Creighton Chamber of Commerce: $1,000

Verdigre improvement Club: $1,000

Niobrara Promoters: $1,000

Corps of Discovery Welcome Center $1,000

Outlaw Trails Scenic Byway: $500

Shannon Trail Promoters & Statues: $500

Knox County board members thanked Riesberg for all the work he has put in as Chairman of the Knox County Visitors Committee.

“Dale does a great job,” Supervisor Rayder Swanson said.
