Lady Vikes pick up tny. title

WAUSA — The Lady Vikings notched two more wins this weekend at the Wausa Post Holi- day Tournament, defeating Niobrara/Verdigre in the first round and Ewing in the championship game. Both wins were more than well earned, as they defeated the Lady Cougars in overtime 60-58, and overcame the Lady Tigers 39-24 to win the tournament.

Senior Krissy Kumm led the team in both efforts, scoring 16 and 10 points in the two games. She has been a vital scorer for Wausa all season, as she is averaging 11.4 points on the season, leading the team.

Junior Megan Kleinschmit led the effort down low, racking up 12 rebounds throughout the tournament, including two blocks against Niobrara/Verdigre in the first round match up.

In that overtime game, Wausa led two quarters and tied one, but the Lady Cougars late effort in the fourth forced overtime, as they scored 16 to Wausa’s 8. The Purple People Eaters controlled the extra time with a defensive stand, holding the Lady Cougars to just four points.

Overtime was foreshadowing for the cham- pionship game, as Wausa was the only team to score double digits in a quarter and that didn’t happen until the fourth. Winning 39-24, Big Purple shut down Ewing’s second half efforts allowing just nine points in 16 minutes.

While Kleinschmit was scoreless in the sec- ond game, she put in a lot of work down low

grabbing nine rebounds on the night.
These two wins put Wausa back above the .500 mark at 7-5, and gave them six days of rest until their next match up. They will host Randolph on Friday night, a team with three away games this week against Allen, Hartington-

Newcastle, and Wausa.
