Lady Vikes earn third-place honors

CREIGHTON  — The Wausa Lady Vikings earned third-place honors in the Creighton Holiday Tournament.

In the first round, Wausa lost to Boyd County for the second time this season, but they beat Creighton for the second time this season, giving them a third place finish.

The Lady Vikings first matchup against Boyd County was an impressive battle between the two teams. Despite losing 38-31, it is clear to see how this team has grown since the first time they played the Lady Spartans.

Late in the game with 1:10 left in the fourth quarter, senior Regan Hennings makes two foul shots to make it a three point game. After fouling the Lady Spartans the following possession, Wausa turns over the ball, and Boyd County makes both of their free throws.

Hennings led the charge against Boyd County, scoring 11 points, but against Creighton it was all senior Krissy Kumm.

Kumm scored 21 points to help the Lady Vikings take home the third place plaque, but that is not her season high. In fact, Kumm scored 23 against Creighton earlier this year. It seems she may just see something in the Lady Bulldog defense that gives her the hot hand.

Big Purple has been battling injuries all year, and that continued at the tournament. Megan Kleinschmit was able to play, but she recently got her wisdom teeth taken out and apparently may have taken a shot to the jaw during the Boyd County game.

After that game, head coach Terry Nelson said, “Boyd County is a good team, but they just flat out beat us inside. They were more physical, and it got to be a slow grinding game. We don’t do well in those games. We are used to speed up and down the courts, and they slowed it down.”

With going 1-1 at the holiday tournament, the Wausa girls are now 5-4 on the season, and will play Niobrara/Verdigre next at home on Thursday.
