WAUSA — He doesn’t wear a cape, but Justen Gillillan is a super hero to his customers and the community. Gillillan, custom applicator at CHS Wausa, was recently recognized as a finalist for the CHS Applicator of the Year award.

CHS Applicator of the Year recognizes custom applicators who provide outstanding customer service, attention to detail, focus on safety, performance in the field and community involvement.

Gillillan was one of four finalists nationwide.

“Justen’s attention to detail and communication are evident in all that he does. He makes certain everyone is on the same page, the right product is being applied and the equipment is in top condition. He’s earned tremendous respect from his customers and they look to him to quickly and accurately adjust to changing field conditions,” said Larry Schermerhorn, vice president, farm supply for CHS Country Operations.

Gillillan has been with CHS Wausa for seven years, and served as a custom applicator for six of those years. He annually spreads nearly 26,372 acres using a John Deere 4930 sprayer and spreads an additional 18,444 acres.

“Justen has a strong understanding of the products, and, more importantly, the weed control those products provide. When field conditions change, he quickly works with the grower to adjust the product recommendation,” Travis Kauth, agronomy manager, CHS Wausa, who nominated Gillillan.

“On top of that, he’s a great mentor to others on our team and our interns,” adds Kauth.

The award recognizes all that applicants do to enrich the communities in which they live and work. Gillillan is an active member of the volunteer fire department and ambulance crew, and has been involved in leading the community’s three key fundraisers held throughout the year.

Other regional finalists include Matt Atkinson, CHS Sun Basin, Quincy, Wash., and Paul Folden, Garrison Farmers Elevator, Garrison, N.D. Tom Leuthardt, Chokio, Minn., was recognized as the CHS Applicator of the Year for 2013.
