94th annual Memorial Day services planned for May 27

WAUSA — For the 94th year, the Wausa community will honor deceased war veterans in Memorial Day exercises May 27.

The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., in the community auditorium. The event is sponsored by Earl Norman American Legion Post 63, Roy Carlson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5824 and their Auxiliaries.

This year there are 254 graves and markers of veterans in the Wausa and  Magnet communities. Crosses will be placed on the Veterans graves in cemeteries before the weekend.

Added since last year are the graves of Donald Koehler at the Woodlawn Cemetery and Russell Johnson at the Thabor Lutheran Cemetery.

A concert by the Wausa High School and Junior High Bands, conducted by Courtney Clausen, will open the event in the auditorium at 9:50 a.m. Band members should report to school by 9 a.m., in appropriate casual clothing.

After the Color Guard, Girl Scouts and children with flowers enter. The Boy Scouts will carry decorated crosses to be placed by the large memorial crosses near the auditorium. Rev. Adam Salinas will lead the Memorial prayer. Mark Dawson and Mike Kumm will read the veterans memorial roll call as children place poppies in a symbolic memorial field in  front of the auditorium stage.

Margaret Seagren will introduce the local winners of the Voice of Democracy contest, Hannah Knox and Tanor McFarland.

Rev. Adam Salinas will deliver the Memorial Day address followed by the benediction. Retiring of the colors will follow as the ceremony moves  to the auditorium park.

The American Legion Memorial Day committees are: Flags and crosses at Thabor Lutheran Cemetery, Lowell Erickson; Flags and crosses at Woodlawn Cemetery, Randy Carlson and Rodney Banks; Flags and crosses at  Golgotha Lutheran Cemetery, Duane Kumm ; Flags and crosses at Magnet Cemetery, Mark Dawson: place large flags at Lutheran and Woodlawn Cemeteries, Mark Dawson; Park memorials, Lowell Erickson.

Removing the small flags and crosses: Thabor Lutheran Cemetery,  Lowell Erickson; Golgotha Lutheran  Cemetery, Duane Kumm; Magnet Cemetery, Mark Dawson; Woodlawn Cemetery, Larry Carlson. Auditorium Park Memorials, Lowell Erickson; Large flags Lutheran and Woodlawn Cemeteries, Mark Dawson.

Crosses were decorated by VFW and Legion Auxiliary members. The men who plan to distribute the crosses and small flags may pick them up at the auditorium stage at any time before 5 p.m., Friday, May 24. All small flags and crosses must be returned to the auditorium stage by 8 a.m., May 28, where they will be cleaned.

Children from age four through third grade will put poppies on the memorial in the auditorium. Younger children may participate if they wish to follow the older siblings. They are to meet in the basement at 9:30 a.m. Ladies will guide them as they come in and the children may return to their parents after all have put poppies by the crosses. If parents are unable to attend, the children will sit by the Auxiliary members during the program.

Members of VFW Post 5824 and American Legion Post #63 are reminded they are needed for the Honor Guard, Color Guard and Firing Squad. Please be at the auditorium by 9:45 a.m.
