Obituary – Kathy Steffen

Kathy Steffen, age 58, of Fordyce, died on Sunday, March 30, 2008 in an automobile accident west of Fordyce.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 10:30 am at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Crofton with Rev. Joseph Broudou officiating.  Burial will be at the Crofton City Cemetery.  Visitation will be on Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service and Video Tribute at 7:45 pm at church.  Visitation will begin one hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Kathy was born on July 13, 1949 at Yankton to Ronald and Verona (Eaton) Gobel.  She grew up in Omaha and graduated from Benson High School in 1967.  She married Mike Schwarte and they had 3 children. In 1980 she moved to Crofton and married Doug Steffen on April 5, 1986 in Crofton.  She decorated cakes in Crofton and Yankton and later worked at Walmart for the last 10 years.  She loved all of her family particularly her eight grandchildren.  She loved being outdoors; and, frequently, she traveled to the mountains and spent time at the lake.  She enjoyed spending time at her pool and was very fond of her dogs and farm cats to which she gave special care.  She was a very compassionate and giving woman.

Survivors include her husband, Doug of Fordyce; three children, Rob and Susan Schwarte and their children Kaitlin and Kristin Schwarte of Lincoln, Nebraska, Rich and Alecia Schwarte and their children Jackson and Katie Schwarte of Dallas, Texas, and Rhonda and Scott Mines and their children Maddie, Haley, Holly, and Ivy Mines of Yankton, South Dakota; father, Ron Gobel of Beatrice, Nebraska; eight brothers and sisters, Dean and Rosie Gobel of Rapid City, South Dakota, Nancy and Bruce Schaeffer of Kensal, North Dakota, Pam Langfeldt of Crofton, Nebraska, Libby Bond of Beatrice, Jane and Richard Elske of Tekamah, Nebraska, Donna and Bobby Schnell of Beatrice, Mary Jo and Brad Thomas of Morse Bluff, Nebraska, and Jim and Shelli Gobel of Tekamah.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Verona.
