Fires burning up Northeast Nebraska

SOUTH YANKTON — Fire fighters from around the area were kept busy Wednesday afternoon trying to put out field fires.

A fire northeast of Crofton was finally contained late Wednesday. Fire fighters from 11 communities including Crofton, Fordyce, Hartington, Bloomfield, Wausa, Wynot and Yankton, S.D., Volin, S.D., Lesterville, S.D. Gayville, S.D. and Tabor, S.D. responded to the blaze which was pushed by winds of up to 40 miles an hour.

The blaze, which was fueled by winds of over 30 miles an hour, decimated about 960 acres of Cedar County farm land.

The fire started about three miles west of the Menominee corner. The blaze jumped roads and a creek, racing across cropland and wooded areas before it was finally contained.

Fires were also reported Wednesday near Allen and near Verdigre.
