Taxes, voting rights and agriculture featured in latest legislative proposals

LINCOLN — The second week of the 2017 legislative session produced a variety of bills. Here are some of the notable bills introduced this week.
Several of the bills introduced related to taxes and worker benefits:
LB 169, sponsored by Sen. Justin Wayne of Omaha, would make Social Security benefits, retirement benefits and military retirement benefits exempt from state income taxation.
LB 212, sponsored by Sen. Matt Hansen of Lincoln, would adopt the In the Line of Duty Compensation Act, which would provide for payments to survivors of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
LB 313, sponsored by Sen. Tom Briese of Albion, would change the sales tax rate, earned income tax credit, and provide property tax credits.
LB 342, sponsored by Sen. Steve Erdman of Bayard, would adopt the Nurse Licensure Compact and provide military spouses with temporary nursing licenses.
A number of proposed bills relate to voting:
LB 197, sponsored by Sen. Rick Kolowski of Omaha, would provide electronic application for early voting ballots.
LB 163, sponsored by Sen. Tony Vargas of Omaha, would add polling places before elections in certain counties.
