Wynot falls behind in state title game

MITCHELL, S.D. — The Wynot Expos jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first inning of play in the championship game of the South Dakota Class B State Amateur Baseball Tournament here.
Wynot fell behind 9-4 after five innings of play, though.
Wynot got one run back in the sixth inning when Cliff Kephart led off with a triple and Lee Heimes drove him home with an RBI single. Despite the strong start, that’s all the offense the Exos could muster in the frame.
The Dell Rapids Mudcats opened the contest by putting one run on the board against starting pitcher Tyler Heine.
Wynot responded in their half of the inning by plating a pair of runners.
Dell Fapids Jesse Kurtenbach got things going when he reached base on an error. Travis Peters then drove him home on a sacrafice fly. Tyler Heine was then replaced on the mound by Bill Guenther, a pick-up player from Crofton.
Wynot’s bats came to life early when lead-off batter Matt Hames smacked a lead-off single down the left field line. Nick Hegge then hit into a fielder’s choice to eliminate Hames. Lee Heimes then showed his power by driving the ball over Cadwell Park’s green monster in left field for a two-run homer.
