Wynot girls fall short in L&C title game

WYNOT — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils fell one game short of winning the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament title last week.
The Lady Devils advanced to the title game with wins over Hartington and Allen.
The conference title game was a rematch of the Sept. 26 contest between Homer and Wynot. The Homer Lady Knights ended up winning both contests.

Wynot, now 21-4 on the year, was slated to head into D2-5 SubDistrict action Tuesday in Plainview. Wynot is favored to win the SubDistrict, as the Lady Devils are the only team with a winning record. The SubDistrict champ will then take on the D2-6 champ for the right to participate at the State Tournament. Stuart, 27-2, is the top seed in that SubDistrict.
The first set in Friday’s title game was a close affair, with Homer pulling away for the four-point win at the end.
The Lady Devils turned up the heat in the second set to earn the dominating 25-13 win and knot the contest at 1-1. The Lady Knights bounced back from that set back to earn 25-19 and 25-15 wins to claim the title.
Wynot Coach Tammy Wieseler said her team wasn’t consistant enough to beat a good team like Homer.
”We had our ups and downs during this match. We gave up too many points in a row. Their back row dug up one of our best hits, which can really take the wind out of your sails,” Coach Wieseler said.
Maggie Schulte led the Lady Devils at the net with 10 kills, while Bailey Kuchta wasn’t far behind with nine.
Erica Burbach and Kattie Savoy paced the team at the service line with three ace serves each. Savoy also paced the defense with 20 digs.
