Wynot girls fall flat against Brady

GRAND ISLAND — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils just couldn’t get into a groove in Thursday’s first-round of the Class D2 State Tournament.
Brady kept the Lady Devils off balance to earn the four-set victory and knock Wynot from the tourney.

“I wish we could have started our first match of the State Tournament with more intensity and excitement,“ Coach Tammy Wieseler said. “We didn’t seem very fired up to be there. When we fell behind we spent most of the game trying to play defense.”
Brady earned the 25-19 win in the first set, then put the Lady Devils on the brink of elimination with a 25-18 win in the second set.

Wynot came back strong in the third set to post the 25-20 win.
“A little of the fire came back for the third match and we were having fun again,” Wieseler said.
Brady was not to be denied, though, as they sent Wynot packing with the 25-15 win in the fourth set.
“Their setter gave our blockers a really hard time. It was not easy to read where she was setting to, so our block was late getting there,” Coach Wieseler said.
Bailey Kuchta paced the Lady Devils at the net with 12 kills. Shelby Wieseler set the team up with 31 set assists.
The Wynot defense was led by Kattie Savoy and Bailey Kuchta with 21 digs each. Maggie Schulte also had four blocks to aid the defense.
Megan Polt led a balanced attack for Brady with 14 kills followed by 11 from Courtney Widick and nine each from Valerie Most and Dakota Terry.

Despite the short visit to the State Tourney, Wieseler said her team should still be very proud of its efforts this season.
”I am very proud of the team and the year they had,” she said.
Wynot finished the season with a 25-5 record, while Brady went on to defeat Stuart for third place in the tourney.
