Wynot girls advance to State again

NORFOLK — It was a youth movement in the District D2-3 championship game between the Wynot Lady Blue Devils and the O’Neill St. Mary’s Cardinals at Norfolk Catholic on Friday night.

Both team sport rosters full of underclassmen. There is a sense that this was just the beginning of spirited competition that might repeat itself in the future.
The Blue Devils would open the game with an 18-5 first quarter run and put it away with a 22-14 third quarter burst as they took home the championsip plague with a 61-45 win.
St. Mary’s was lead by their sensation freshman guard Brooke Bauer who lead all scorers with 21 points. Jessie Simons also hit double figures with 10 points for the Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Blue Devils got 14 points from their talented freshman Maggie Schulte and solid support from juniors Shelby Wieseler with 11 points and Bailey Kuchta with 10 points.
The tempo of the game was going to be fast from the start as both teams like to push the ball on offense and full court press on defense.
Wynot got off to the fast start as they force the St. Mary’s youngster into numerous turnovers in the first quarter and got 8 quick points from Maggie Schulte and a three pointer by Katie Savoy at the buzzer help stake them to an early 18-5 lead.
O’Neill would settle down in the second quarter and mount a rally. Brooke Bauer connected for seven points and Jessi Simons contributed six points in the outburst. With the relentless pressure the fouls were mounting up for the Blue Devils and the Lady Cardinals also hit 7-10 freethrows in the period as they climbed back in the game with a 15-9 run and closed the gap to 27-20 at the half.
The offensive pace ramped up in the third quarter for both teams. St. Mary’s got nine points from Brooke Bauer and fieldgoals by Jessi Simons and Caitlin Podany. Wynot countered with the inside play of Bailey Kuchta who erupted for six and treys by Erica Burbach and Shelby Wieseler as they increased their lead to 49-34.
The Blue Devils finally slowed the pace in the fourth quarter and hit 6 of 9 free throws down the stretch to take the 61-45 win and advance to Lincoln for the state tournament.
