Wynot boys split openers

WYNOT — The Wynot Blue Devils split a pair of games in the opening week of the basketball season.
On Thursday, the Blue Devils had trouble shaking off the rust from the off-season and were beaten by the Newcastle Raiders, .
It was a different story Friday, though.
In Friday’s home-opener against the Winside Wildcats, Wynot rebounded and put together a late-game run to pull out a win.

Thursday the Blue Devils ran into a revitalized Newcastle Raider basketball team, sparked by a hot-shooting Grant Rolfes, whose 20-point-effort led his team to a 44-38 win.
Curtis Kathol led the Blue Devils’ attack with seven points and Ryan Boeckman worked the inside for six points and six rebounds.
In the first quarter Rolfes erupted for eight fast points and Jacob Hinz hit a trey as Newcastle built a 17-9 early lead.
Michael Wieseler hit a trey and Ryan Boeckman had a pair of offensive rebound put-backs for the Blue Devils but they could not gain much ground on the Raiders and still trailed 25-18 at the half.
Treys by Zach Jones and Curtis Kathol tried to rally the Blue Devils after the half but four points each from Grant Rolfes and Sam Kneifl minimized the damage and Newcastle maintained a 33-28 advantage.
Michael Wieseler and Ryan Heimes hit a pair of clutch treys for Wynot in the final period but six more points by Rolfes helped to seal the 44-38 win for the Raiders.

The Wynot Blue Devils trailed the Winside Wildcats for most of their game Friday night but a furious fourth-quarter rally grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat and they squeaked out a 55 -52 come-from-behind win to even their season record at 1-1.
The Blue Devils got 17 points from Zach Jones, including some clutch free throws in the final minute of the game to help his team to victory.
Michael Wieseler contributed nine points and four steals and Ryan Boeckman also chipped in nine points with five rebounds to aid the Blue Devils’ cause.

The Blue Devils struggled to find the basket in the second frame. The Wildcats had no such problem as they went on a 20-5 run to build a 32-17 halftime lead. Turnovers and Matt Peter’s big 15-point outburst did most of damage.

In the third quarter, the Blue Devils started to crawl back into it.
Zach Jones’ nine points and 8-11 free throw shooting rallied Wynot but they still trailed 44-35 going into the final period of play.
In the final quarter, Wynot’s full-court press seemed to wear the Wildcats down and led to several transition baskets.

A pair of field goals each from Ryan Boeckman and Zach Jones cut the lead to four points with just two minutes on the clock.
A Ryan Heimes steal and put-back and Devin Wieseler’s field goal put Wynot up by one at 51-50.
Aaron Mangels then hit a short jumper for the Wildcats, but Jones hit three freethrows in the final seconds of the game and Wynot escaped with the 55-52 win.
The Blue Devils next see action at Osmond Friday night.
