Wynot boys need overtime to dispatch Wausa

HARTINGTON — The Wynot Blue Devils and Wausa Vikings locked in a real dog fight for the championship of the D2-5 SubDistrict Thursday at Cedar Catholic’s gym.
This one took an extra period to decide the outcome as the Blue Devils would outscore the Vikings 5-0 in the overtime and earn the 45-40 win.

The Blue Devils fell behind early, rallied back just before the half, built a 10-point lead in the third quarter only to see Wausa rally back in the fourth quarter.
Marcus Claussen led all scorers for the Vikings with 13 points and Austin Conn had a steady game at point guard and finished with nine points.
Wynot was led by Austin Wieseler and Nathan Wieseler with 11 points each. Chris Schmidt was a monster on the boards with 11 rebounds to go along with his seven points.
Wynot got four points from Koby Sudbeck in the opening frame but Wausa had an answer with seven points from Marcus Claussen and an Austin Conn three-pointer from the left corner as the Vikes took a 12-8 lead.
Wynot would tighten down the defense in the second quarter. Behind four points from Austin Wieseler and three points from Nathan Wieseler Wynot would take a 17-16 lead into the locker room at the half.
Wynot would go on a 16-7 third quarter scoring run. A trey and five points form Chris Schmidt and pair of lay-ins in close from Nathan Wieseler fueled the run. Wynot stretched their lead to 10 points at 33-23.
The Vikings staged a rally of their own in the fourth quarter.
Three pointers each by Austin Conn and Marcus Claussen and six points by Trevor Wakeley paced the rally. Claussen would knife through the lane for a lay in to tie the score at 40-40 and send the game into overtime.
Wynot could only manage a fieldgoal by Austin Wieseler and 3-13 free throw shooting in the overtime period, but their defense would rise up to shut out the Vikings in the extra period and earn the five-point win.
