Win puts Seniors in State Tny

Hartington’s Cody Stappert does an acrobatic stretch to get the out at first base against Ainsworth’s Garrett Farr during action in Monday’s Class C Area 1 District Semifinal game. Hartington won the contest 13-0 to advance to the championship game.

CROFTON — The Hartington American Legion Seniors earned a 13-0 win over Ainsworth here Monday to earn a trip to the  State Tournament.

This marks the second straight year that many of the Hartington players have advanced to State Tourney play. The Hartington Juniors played in last year’s State event. Many of those players now play for the Senior team.

Monday’s win put Hartington into the Area 1 District title game against Creighton.

Area 1 will send two teams to State since Creighton will host this year’s State Tournament and has an automatic berth.

Ty Uhing earned the four-hit complete-game shutout, picking up his second win of the tournament. Uhing  struck out four Ainsworth batters on the night and only gave up  one walk. Ainsworth used five pitchers in the contest to try and contain the Hartington offense.

Hartington pounded out 13 hits in the contest. Ty Uhing led the team at the plate, with his 3-4 performance, including a double. Nick Uhing and Keenan Sudbeck both belted out triples in the win. Three Hartington athletes — Nick Uhing, Kellyn Dump, Aaron Steffen and Mitchell Bruening — scored two runs each in the contest.

Hartington got off to a fast start in this one, collecting two first-inning hits. Aaron Steffen scored the first run of the game after being hit by a pitch to reach the basepaths. He then advanced to second when Ryan Beckman hit a ball to the outfield that was mis-handled by the Ainsworth defense. Cody Stappert then smacked a scorcher down the third base line to score Steffen.

Hartington pushed three more runs across the plate in the second frame. Mitchell Bruening led off the frame with a walk. Kellyn Dump then drove him home with an infield hit. Steffen’s single then drove in Dump. Frank Herbolsheimer, who was hit by a pitch in the inning, also worked his way around the bases to score on a wild pitch.

The lead ballooned to 7-0 in the fourth inning when Hartington picked up three more runs. Kellyn Dump led off the inning with a walk. Keenan Sudbeck’s blast into left field drove him home and landed Sudbeck on third base with the team’s first triple of the night. Aaron Steffen then reached base on an error at first. He moved to second on another error and took third on Ryan Boeckman’s sacrifice. Ty Uhing’s RBI single then scored Steffen.

Nick Uhing led off the fifth inning with a triple, then came home on Frank Herbolsheimer’s RBI single to score the team’s lone run in the fifth frame. Coach Tim Loberg started putting the reserves into the contest after that.

Hartington put the game away in the sixth inning with a five-run outburst. Tyler Loberg, Cody Stappert, Ty Uhing, Trent Jansen and Nick Uhing all crossed the plate in the inning. The Hartington defense then again shut down the Ainsworth bats to earn the 13-0 decision.
